Medical visa for India from Tanzania

Which visa you can apply for
Tanzania is on India's e-Visa eligible list, so you may apply online for an e-Medical visa — or use the paper Medical (MED) visa if it suits your route better.
Processing time
The two missions differ. Dar es Salaam: normally three working days for Tanzanian nationals, five for residents of other countries. Zanzibar: normally within 24 hours for Tanzanian nationals, 5–7 days for foreign residents.
Validity
Up to six months, one year, or the period of treatment, whichever is less — extendable by the State Government or FRRO on production of a medical certificate from a recognised hospital. For the e-Medical visa the official sources conflict (365 days versus 60 days); confirm on your grant letter.
Entries
Paper MED: single or multiple up to 6 months; multiple for 6 months to 1 year. e-Medical: multiple. e-Medical Attendant: 60 days, multiple entry.
Medical attendant visa
Up to two attendants. The patient receives a Medical Visa and each accompanying person a Medical Escort Visa, co-terminus with the patient's visa and at the same fee. No specific relationship proof is demanded in the published text.
Vaccination certificates
Tanzania is NOT on India's yellow fever endemic list, but the High Commission still lists a valid yellow fever certificate among the documents required to apply — and Zanzibar repeats it. Carry the certificate: the quarantine risk is low but the risk of visa refusal without it is real. Tanzania is not on the polio-affected list.
Documents you need
As published by High Commission of India, Dar es Salaam. Missing any one of these is the most common reason a medical visa application is rejected.

The hospital invitation letter
For the paper medical visa a hospital invitation letter as such is not required — Dar es Salaam accepts either preliminary medical advice with a referral to India, or a letter of appointment with a doctor at a recognised Indian institution. For the e-Medical route a letter IS required, on hospital letterhead, giving the tentative admission date and the patient's name, nationality and passport number.

e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant are US$80 each plus a 3% bank charge. The paper MED visa is US$80 + US$3, published locally as TSh 220,000 all-in for up to 6 months, or US$120 / TSh 325,000 for up to 1 year. An emergency fee of US$35 (TSh 100,000) applies in addition. Fees are non-refundable.
FRRO registration
The Tanzania mission states an unconditional requirement: anyone travelling on a Medical or Medical Escort visa must register with the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of arrival. This is stricter than the national rule, under which registration is required only above 180 days validity. Follow the stricter mission wording.
No agent is needed for an e-Visa
The High Commission warns that the e-Visa is a completely online application requiring no intermediary, and advises travellers not to fall for agents claiming speedy or express grant of an e-Visa for a fee.
Zanzibar applicants use a different mission
Select TANZANIA-ZANZIBAR as the mission and submit at the Consulate. If you receive no appointment date for 5 consecutive days after registering, contact the High Commission.
